"Universal Design" - A Standard in Building

Universal Design standards were originally developed to provide easy access for the disabled. However, these homes are appealing, convenient, and comfortable for a variety of indivduals. Universal design homes include such things as lever door handles, wide hallways, wide doorways, higher electrical sockets, access ramps instead of stairs, easy bathroom access to showers and toilets with removable bars and supports if not needed, and lower light switches. They are also designed with everyone in mind so that they eliminate the 'hospital' quality of earlier designs and can benefit people at all stages of life.
